The car rental tax hike the county commission passed last week to fund CATS (city General Fund money that had previously gone to CATS would then be used to pay for the Wachovia Arts Tower) is going to raise “too much” money. There might be a little left-over. The question, how to spend it?

Parks Helms wants to spend it on Uptown baseball and help build a tax-free stadium for Tim Newman’s former boss, Don Beaver. Hotel lobbyist Mohammed Jenatian wants to spend it on subsidizing amateur sports events which, in theory, will help fill up hotels. Remember Charlotte’s big ping-pong bash in July? Didn’t think so.

And some guy named Pat McCrory thinks spending it on roads might not be a bad idea.

We’re back to the old question: Great place to live, or great place to visit?

The question kinda answers itself, doesn’t it?
