There’s a conspiracy of silence about last Friday’s stabbing at Independence High. Two key facts have yet to make it to the wider public although they are widely remarked upon within the school.
The first is that many IHS teachers believe the stabbing to be gang-related, the Salvadoran MS-13 gang specifically. It is unclear if police are following up this angle, but then again the nature of the injuries the two girls sustained has not been clearly understood either. The attacker cut her hand when her hand slipped down onto the blade of the steak knife. The other girl’s injuries are much more severe and could’ve been much worse.
The other hush-hush wrinkle is that IHS asked for more security before the fight and was turned down by CMS. As a result the fight was broken up by three teachers, two female, and not CMS security or the school resource officer. Plus the request for more security was made directly to superintendent Frances Haithcock on the day before the fight.
