The Town of West Jefferson is being sued as an attempt to thwart the implementation of an ETJ. The challenges, not atypically, pertain to legal technicalities and not anything unethical like one governing body making laws for people outside its jurisdiction. The aldermen, not atypically, claimed the ETJ was needed to stop smut shops from cropping up.

At a special meeting held on April 5, West Jefferson Mayor Dale Hudler told the audience that the ETJ is “not new taxes” and “not a master plan for annexation” since the town would have to run water and sewer lines to hundreds of houses within two years.

Hudler later described the ETJ as “an organized way for the town to grow in the future.”
