The U.S. Senate defeated Harry Reid’s cloture vote this morning (53 no votes), pretty much killing immigration reform until after 2008. Of course, AP is making a point of calling this “President Bush’s plan,” neglecting to point out that the sponsor of the backroom immigration-reform bill was Ted Kennedy. Sure, Bush wanted it. So did Republicans Arlen Specter and Lindsay Graham, but the major backing for this bill was on the Democratic side of the aisle. That will get lost in tonight’s coverage, I predict.
