I applaud the First Lady for being concerned about her family’s eating habits. But in a free society, what you and I eat, or where, or when, or how much, is nobody’s business — certainly not the government’s. While I wish the president would stop smoking, it is his decision to do so — not mine — and not the government’s. Clearly, the government’s numerous warnings and education campaigns have not pushed him to kick the habit for good.

The First Lady, however, clearly believes your lifestyle and what you eat is her business, as her remarks to the National Restaurant Association show.

Notice that she references health care costs as a reason for needing to change America’s lifestyle. As predicted, the new health care law is so broad and invasive that health care costs will be the catch-all reason for more government intervention into our daily lives. I have no quarrel with the First Lady advocating for a healthier lifestyle. Achieving that goal through government requirements on the consumer or the seller is a completely different matter and a troubling one.
