Asheville City Councilman Jan Davis recently remarked some of the Buncombe County public libraries, “are better buildings than libraries.” Some obviously aren’t good enough buildings. The main library is going to shut down for six to eight months for renovations. Architectural and construction costs are expected to run around $3.1 million. Equipment upgrades will cost an undisclosed additional amount. Renovations include new restrooms, new carpeting, removed ceilings, an expanded children’s area, and the creation of a used bookstore and lounge. A new HVAC system will be provided, but reports of the old one’s shortcomings have not made the newspapers. Perhaps the closing will help academic achievers get turned on to gangs, drugs, or at least more reality TV.
