The folks on the Young Americans for Freedom alumni listserv are trading their personal stories about Jack Kemp.
I thought this one from Neil Wallace was especially amusing.
I worked for Jack during his first term. My favorite story was how he was elected in his first campaign. The race was close and he was asked by a reporter a few days before the vote what he would do if he lost. Jack said he has two years left on his contract with the Buffalo Bills so he’s probably go back to playing for them. A few days after winning he was in a taxi. the driver said to him, “Mr. Kemp, I’ve been a Democrat all my life. But when I read that you would return to the Bills if you lost, as a fan of the Bills I thought it was important to vote for you!”
