She’s an agent with the SBI assigned to the pathology section. Has a BS in microbiology and an MA in forensics. Seems to have her stuff together.

Got the Duke biological evidence on March 27. None of it tested positive for semen or sperm. She was on a conference call with Nifong on March 30. They discussed what would be sent for DNA testing. Nifong advised the rape could would not be sent for DNA testing.

She looked for short-tandem repeats in the DNA of lacrosse players to see if it matched any of the evidence samples. 13 cuttings from a towel, floor swabs and some false fingernails were tested. She had Mangum and players’ DNA to compare to. Says assailant doesn’t have to ejaculate to leave DNA.

Nifong called her on April 6. She told him the towel cutting and swabs on the floor were done but not the fingernails. He asked if it were possible to test the towel for feces. She said the SBI doesn’t test for that and gave him the name of a lab in Illinois that did that.

Spoke to him again on April 7, told him results of floor swabs, towel and fingernails. Brocker: Is it usual to speak with a DA about results? Leyn: Not usual.

Brocker: Did any DNA link any player to Mangum? Leyn: No. Brocker: Did you tell Nifong? Leyn: Yes. Found some player DNA on floor swabs and towel but none of Mangum on those items.

She’s going through reports and there is nothing, nothing, nothing that connects the players to Mangum or indicates any rape or assault.

She says the SBI was asked to test for controlled substances on a paper towel. Boy, they were checking for everything. Also tested for volatile organic substances.

She says amount of testing in this case was unusual in volume and number of types of testing that was done for this case. Reports completed and given to Nifong before April 17, the date Seligmann and Finnerty were indicted.

She spoke to Meehan on several occasions. Wanted info on her case notes and work done on samples. She reviewed DNA Security Inc.’s procedures after Nifong recused himself, at invite of the Attorney General. Said DSI does some testing that SBI doesn’t.
