Not that it matters now, but the Winston-Salem Journal ponders the question many taxpayers are asking themselves —- why is Mayor Allen Joines running unopposed in the upcoming municipal election?

Forsyth County GOP chair Nathan Tabor says it’s all about the money:

Tabor said the Republican Party has estimated that a candidate would need about $300,000 to wage a successful campaign against Joines.

“When you look at trying to raise $300,000 from a group within Winston-Salem, there are only so many people who can write $1,000 or $2,000 or $4,000 checks,” Tabor said. “And then you start looking at who the mayor has his support from, you start doing the math, and you see that there’s just not a lot of ability to raise that kind of money.”

Meanwhile, Joines has formed a task force to find a new tenant for the soon-to-be-abandoned Dell plant.
