Echoing Freedom’s Barry Smith, the Winston-Salem Journal calls for a raise in state legislators’ pay:

Considering that many legislators are retired, the longer the session goes, the more they can put in the bank.

The salary system, therefore, has a way of dissuading people who are working for someone else from running for the legislature. Small-business owners often can’t take the time, either. That eliminates a considerable share of the working-age population. And it encourages more retired people, thus giving the legislature an age profile out of kilter with the general population.

Gasp —– an ageist opinion coming from the bleeding hearts over at the Journal?
