The Journal is worried Winston-Salem will become just another “city of the arts”:

As Winston-Salem and Forsyth County hammer out their new budgets, they should include healthier allocations for the arts.

As it stands now, the city of Winston-Salem spends just $2.33 per capita on the arts, the city found in a recent study. Yet a 2002 analysis found that the arts in Winston-Salem is a $76 million industry that supports more than 2,700 full-time jobs, stimulates at least $46.9 million in spending and generates $6.8 million in local and state tax revenue.

Beyond all their obvious aesthetic value, the arts are just plain good business.

Just plain good business, huh? I guees that’s why the state had to take over SEECA.
