Similar to our earlier discussion about the way pollsters phrase survey questions, these latest results from Rasmussen also hinge on how one defines the terms involved:

Only 53% of American adults believe capitalism is better than socialism.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 20% disagree and say socialism is better. Twenty-seven percent (27%) are not sure which is better.

The poll did not define the terms “socialism” and “capitalism,” so that makes a big difference. It’s concerning, however, that the term “socialism” has gained a positive connotation given what it actually means.

Also noteworthy: the percentage of respondents who preferred socialism to capitalism tallies with the percentage of Americans who self-identify as liberal.
