The Mountain Xpress‘ Ursula Gullow takes a look at what it takes to survive as an artist in the bohemian mecca known as Asheville. Strategies include working a second, third, or fourth job; having a sugar daddy, crashing in crammed quarters; eating off food stamps; and running up credit cards. Some say the problem is the amateurish nature of art in this city. Artists are dissatisfied that people who can jack the price of art up do not patronize the city more. Many are looking to government to find ways to assist.

The newly formed Creative Sector Coalition (comprising more than 15 local arts groups) is holding the First Creative Sector Summit on March 16 and 17. Born from a downtown master plan initiative, the conference will bring together creative professionals, business and community leaders and key stakeholders for networking, education and collaboration. “We’re going to activate the best strategies to enhance the creative sector’s capacity and impact to benefit our community and the economy,” says AAAC program director Graham Hackett.
