In an effort to keep you updated and informed about what your General Assembly is doing, here are several bills that have been introduced in the last couple of days that are of interest.

House Bill 56:
This bill would prohibit involuntary annexation of property that has substantial urban services already in place. Urban services are defined as water, sewer, fire protection, police protection and road maintenance.

House Bill 55: Security and Immigration Compliance that would:

  1. Require public employers to register and participate in the federal work authorization program to verify information on all new employees
  2. Facilitate enforcement of federal immigration laws
  3. Require determination of nationality and immigration status of persons jailed upon felony or impaired driving charges
  4. Establish immigration assistance registration
  5. Allow no income tax deduction for compensation paid to illegal immigrants
  6. Withholding on compensation paid to illegal immigrants
  7. Require verification of lawful presence to receive public benefits

House Bill 57: Phase out Medicaid County Share:
The nonfederal portion of Medicaid costs would be phased out over a five-year period. The total county share during the phase-out period shall not exceed the county share paid by each county for the 2005-2006 fiscal year.

Senate Bill 38:
Amend the Constitution of North Carolina to prohibit eminent domain from being used for economic development purposes.

Senate Bill 39:
Raise the cap on Charter Schools from 100 to 125
