Iraq war veteran and just-defeated Ohio congressional candidate Paul Hackett has called George Bush an S.O.B. and said he was more dangerous to American security than Osama bin Laden. But his campaign saw fit to lead a television advertisement for Hackett with George Bush, as the president says “There is no higher calling than service in our armed forces,” as if he’s endorsing Hackett.
This is rather strange, don’t you think? Pretend to have an endorsement from someone you think’s an S.O.B. and more dangerous than Osama? Seems to me like an admission that you know where the voting public’s sentiments lie with respect to that person.
Anyway, I was trying to think of a similar example of a political advertisement, and the closest I could get was this one, from “The Simpsons,” from Candidate Sideshow Bob against his opponent, Mayor “Diamond” Joe Quimby:
Mayor Quimby supports revolving door prisons. Mayor Quimby even released Sideshow Bob ? a man twice convicted of attempted murder. [scene shows prisoners leaving on escalator and ski lift] Can you trust a man like Mayor Quimby? Vote Sideshow Bob for mayor.
