Already! Now isn’t that $500 million well spent?

hlThe latest Rhino Times, out today, includes this snippet that really, really tells you all you need to know about the light rail project and your city government:

You have to hand it to some city bureaucrats for sheer audacity. In the midst of the latest round of titanic cost overruns and bumbling, stumbling, general mismanagement of the vaunted South Corridor light rail line, City Manager Pam Syfert last month presented the 2006 City Strategy Award to the South Corridor Light Rail and Infrastructure Project Team.

Key city staff team members responsible for the light rail project – most recently in the news for once again busting its budget, which has now doubled original cost estimates to the tune of $462.7 million – were recognized for their “accomplishments in developing collaborative solutions.”

In announcing the award, Syfert said that the city defines “collaboration as developing internal and external partnerships to solve problems and share control in leadership, planning, accountability, risk and reward.” So, relax; everything is collaboratively fine. You may now continue paying the transit half-cent sales tax with a smile.

On the downside, I’m starting to believe those rumors of a mind-control helmet in City Manager-for-Life Syfert’s office are true. How else does she get away with this stuff?
