Looks like Jeff Elder — or someone — thought better of trying to argue that Charlotte’s pro sports biz is “booming.” Check out the version of his local gossip col posted on the Observer’s Web site Sunday. It carried the headline “Sports is booming” and started as follows:

Raise your hand if you remember when there was no Wachovia golf tournament, no NASCAR Hall of Fame, no Charlotte Bobcats, no whitewater center, no plan to bring baseball uptown, and the Panthers were going 1-15.

See the problem? Four of the six ventures mentioned carry millions of dollars in direct taxpayer subsidies. Not much of a boom, more of a whimper.

By today the col carried the headline “Biz pros putting on game faces.” Better.

Better still would be, “Biz pros getting hand-outs.”
