The American Lie, I mean, Lung Association yesterday released its latest scare numbers on how bad the air is around the country, giving Mecklenburg County an F for ozone.

Really? That is one tough grade scale.

First, the Lie Association leaves out 2006 data. Odd. Could it be because Mecklenburg had zero Code Red ozone readings last year?

The recent trend has certainly been toward ever-fewer Code Red days — even as the number of monitors has increased in the county and the official ozone-tracking season has been extended thru October. All things being equal, that should’ve produced an increase in the number of high ozone readings.

Not so.

Looking at N.C. Division of Air Quality numbers from 2002 thru 2006 a grade of F on ozone is revealed to be a propaganda stunt from the Lie Association.

During that time there have been a total of 24 Code Red readings from county ozone monitors. The total number of Code Green readings? 5199. Remember, this is just for the supposed “high ozone” season. Ozone is even lower the rest of the year.

In other words, Code Red readings are less than one-half of one percent of the number of Code Green readings. And get this, as multiple monitors can have a Code Red reading on the same day, we are talking a handful — about a week, total — of Code Red days across four summers in Mecklenburg.

And that is a grade of F?

Where can I drop this class? The teacher is nuts.
