The Greensboro City Council has received a $2.5 million appraisal the Canada Dry property, which is considerably less than the $3.7 million asking price.

Meanwhile, the N&R editorializes on Coliseum director Matt Brown’s efforts to gain City Council approval for his pet project:

….it’s hard to imagine other top staffers —-even City Manager Mitchell Johnson — working so hard behnd the scenes to gain City Council approval for a project.

But Brown has the backing of the War Memorial Commission, which since 1996 has supported acquisition of the Canada Dry property for some use by the coliseum, whether as an expansion or simply parking. And, he said, Johnson hasn’t tried to restrain him.

It’s Brown’s job to maximize the coliseum’s value to the city, and he’s usually not shy about promoting his ideas. But the final say belongs to the City Council, whose members never should let the views of any city employee or department override their obligation to determine what’s best for the city as a whole.

Nice sentiment, but somehow I’m not reassured.
