A letter in USA Today (via Kaiser) contains the standard argument for government healthcare.

The individual market is prohibitively expensive for middle-class
Americans and simply out of reach for those living on low incomes. This
makes Medicaid the sole option for health coverage for the most
vulnerable Americans.

At a time when health care costs are rising for all Americans and fewer
employers are sponsoring health coverage, we should be talking about
how to make overall health care more affordable. We don’t need to be
conjuring up proposals to eliminate health coverage for the most
vulnerable Americans.

But the best way to make overall health care more affordable is to
reduce government’s role in the market. The alternative is for the
government to continue expanding the nation’s largest welfare program — a program that in North Carolina hurts counties as well as the state.
