House Bill 1122 defines colon hydrotherapy as, “The introduction of water into the colon via the anal region for the purpose of cleansing the colon.” This is clearly a very delicate procedure and so colon hydrotherapists want to make sure anybody doing it gets licensed by the state. Another reason for the bill may be that naturopaths also have a bill in the House (HB1404)and another in the Senate (SB1043)seeking licensure that would allow them to perform hydrotherapy.

For those interested in colonics, however, there are already two sources of referrals: the Colonic Network and the International Association of Colon Hydrotherapy. On the naturopath side, there is the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.

Why do we need state boards to further regulate these activities? If they raise the price too much, people might seek alternatives to these alternative treatments.
