Like many people worldwide, I was mesmerized by the drama in Chile, as miner after miner came to the surface. As this drama played out over the last 69 days, we were told that it would be Christmas before they would reach the men. Surprise, with Chilean determination and ingenuity and help from other countries, including America, the Christmas timeline was beaten by more than two months. Then we were told that it would take 48 hours to bring up all of the miners. But it took less than 24 hours. What a feat!

As inspiring as this story is, I was really impressed with Chile’s president and first lady, who were there the entire time to greet the miners. But just as I thought that President Pi?era could not be more impressive, he spoke
about the ordeal. He praised the miners, the rescuers, and the other countries that helped with the rescue, but he did not stop there ? he praised the Chilean people and expressed his faith in God.

Pi?era’s love and respect for his country and its citizens was refreshing. Sadly, I wondered if I would ever again hear a president of the U.S. express that kind of pride in our country or love for all of its citizens.

By the way, Chileans are even proud of their flag. All Americans, elected officials, and President Obama could learn a lot from the Chilean people and their president.
