Tonight, Asheville City Council considered limiting the distance between family care homes. The privilege of doing so has been approved by the General Assembly. The homes accommodate people with physical and mental handicaps and persons recovering from substance abuse. Family care homes are not the same as group homes, because the latter provide treatment.
It seems “issues” have arisen as five family care homes appeared in one neighborhood. According to one complainant, issues involve neighbors being more into tobacco and cussing than children and borrowing a cup of sugar. Neighbors complained about not knowing anymore who belonged in the neighborhood. How surprising it was to learn that the problems were on my short street, and that members of city council had been aware of the problem for a couple years.
