Amid all the hoopla and sleight-of-hand surrounding Operation Uptown Baseball here’s one vital piece of the puzzle that always gets lost. Just how much will Don Beaver and the Charlotte Knights pay in property tax?

We keep hearing that Don is gonna build the city a fine $35 million baseball stadium. Great. On land basically given to him by the county. Not so great. In such a way that the Knights may not pay tax on the full value of the stadium. Uh-oh.

Here’s the bottomline. After Don Beaver builds his stadium, if he is being treated like every other taxpayer in Mecklenburg County, he should get annual property tax bills of around $450,000 give or take a few thousand. For comparison, Bank of America stadium is valued at $150 million and paid property tax of $1.9 million last year. Even better, whip your property tax bill and see how much you paid to support basic city and county functions.

Somehow I doubt the Charlotte city council is gonna pay much attention to such things.
