Speaking of development, the N&R (no surprise) is all for building on that fine piece of open space out by the highway:

Plans by two UNC institutions to create a Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering are promising enough to win $58 million in funding from the General Assembly.

Not bad for a project that doesn’t involve UNC-Chapel Hill, N.C. State and the Research Triangle Park.

Instead, the ambitious undertaking is happening in Greensboro. The JSNN will occupy a site in the new Gateway University Research Park and will be operated by N.C. A&T and UNCG.

The level of cooperation between the new universities was one of the things that most impressed A&T’s new chancellor, Stanley Battle, he said Thursday.

…..The only real concern is that most of the money would be borrowed by the state, which increases the ultimate cost to taxpayers, but this is an investment that should yield handsome returns.

Let’s hope so, because the logic behind the state borrowing $50-plus million to fund this “work of progress” after reaching a deal on a $20 billion budget escapes me.
