Big surprise, GCS is more than likely going to ask county commissioners for more money. Commission chairman Skip Alston says too bad, that “(w)hatever we have to do to absorb cost increases from the state will be through more cuts.”

This is going to be very interesting. I realize the school system and commissioners have met in smaller sessions, but I haven’t seen Superintendent Mo Green speak at one of the commissioners’ regular meetings. I always noted how former Superintendent Terry Grier was like a totally different person in front of commissioners than he was in his comfortable educrat setting; I wonder if Green will undergo the same type of transformation or if he’ll try to talk to commissioners Billy Yow and Steve Arnold the way he talks to the school board, which is enough to put anyone to sleep.

Just in case you don’t have the big picture in focus yet, compare the way county commissioners and the school board are dealing with respective (putting it mildly) budget issues. Alston and his gang are taking action, while the school board wrings its hands over possibly having to cut —- gasp—- professional development. The contrast in leadership is striking, and is something to think when the school board comes up for election.
