Our camp[us] theme week continues apace as two minority-student groups hosted a talk to criticize self-segregation on campus. But don’t think the two groups ? the Black Student Movement or “Sangam, UNC’s South Asian awareness organization” ? pointed any fingers at themselves, despite some in the audience realizing the obvious.

Many members of BSM pointed out in the discussion that BSM really does not self-segregate, because meetings are open to all students.

They said BSM is a cultural preservation group that advances African-American causes such as fighting discrimination and misrepresentation. Several students said it was important to note the distinction between cultural preservation and self-segregation.

Satish Misra, a member of Sangam, said his organization hopes to improve the misconception that Sangam is only for South Asians and invited all groups from campus to come to its meetings.
