The Morganton News-Herald and The Associated Press offer their takes on the felony indictment of Western Piedmont Community College board member Robert Caldwell in the ongoing criminal probe of Gov. Bev Perdue’s “aircraft provider” program.

Both James Fleming, the Morganton barber who provided a check to the Bev Perdue Committee that Caldwell allegedly reimbursed with money provided by an “unnamed source,” and Caldwell said they were unaware of the indictment.

Based on information in an August report of the Perdue flights from State Board of Elections investigator Kim Strach, Carolina Journal was the first media outlet to interview and report about Fleming, Caldwell, Caldwell’s wife (another Perdue donor), and Mike Fulenwider, a fast-food franchisee who arranged the December 2007 flight for Perdue from Hickory through Chapel Hill to Manteo that has piqued the grand jury’s interest.

Stay tuned for updates as they occur.
