On the subject of the previous, N&R columnist Jeri Rowe (unposted) writes about Jim and Jan Laws’ decision to close their Video Review store after 27 years:

Video stores are a relic to our pop culture past. The home video market is a $16.4 billion industry. More than 92 million households own a DVD player.

But by 2012, bricks and mortar stores like Video Review are expected to account for less than half of that business. It seems we’re all renting our movies with the click of a mouse or a pit-stop at a corner kiosk.

Yes, I’m a Netflix customer, but I’m only on the one-movie-at-a time plan, so movies for little would necessitate a weekly trip up to Video Review. Jim and his sons provided excellent customer service and were very knowledgeable about movies. I will miss Video Review, but we consumers create our own economy.
