Former Charlotte city councilman Malachi Greene has resigned from the Lottery Commission. Greene was appointed to the post by Senate Leader Marc Basnight just about a month ago.

At the first lottery commission meeting two weeks ago, Greene didn’t exactly sound thrilled about the prospect of a lottery in the state:

Greene … said he wants to ensure that minority-owned businesses receive some lottery-related contracts.

Greene also warned that, in some states, lottery players are disproportionately black but the lottery proceeds go mostly to whites.

“We have another example of massive wealth transfer from poor people to someone else,” Greene said.

The commission is supposed to meet again tomorrow morning, at which time Greene is expected to make his resignation official.
