The New York Times has done an extremely shoddy piece of work on concealed carry laws, with North Carolina as the main backdrop.

It begins with breathless anecdote about a bicyclist and a fireman with a concealed carry permit. Though the newspaper later admits that this hardly represents the universe of concealed carriers in North Carolina, the way the story begins certainly tries to make that point.

But here’s my favorite part:

The review also raises concerns about how well government officials police the permit process.

No, that is the ONLY concern the story raises. The NYT cites statistics showing an astounding lack of oversight by those charged with administering concealed carry requests in North Carolina. Plug that hole, and this story does not exist.

Nevertheless, the overall tenor of the story is that it is concealed carry per se that is the problem, not the boneheaded administration of the law.
