It is clear from John’s column that he just does not understand what the wise leaders of Cabarrus County intend. There is bad development, or the kind brought on messy, unplanned market demand; and the there is good development, or that which government leaders like and directly benefits local government.

This is why the city of Concord just approved a new hotel and convention center with 32,000 square feet of space to sit next to a city-owned golf course. This is good development as it validates Cabarrus as “destination location” and provides an iconic physical structure signifying the will of leaders made real. This, in turn, makes local leaders feel very important indeed as it shows all the world their great power, not unlike a village headman stacking skulls in the firepit.

Who’s the villain now, John?
