I already knew this, which is exactly why I was upset (with myself) when I read this big, above-the-fold front-page headline in this morning’s N&R:

Green led probe of sports issues in Charlotte

I’ve praised N&R reporter Jennifer Fernandez in the past, but this was a pretty weak article. Very few details on the situation, nothing but praise for the way Mo Green handled alleged recruiting practices while he was chief operating officer at Char-Meck:

Charlotte committee members said Green was invaluable, providing information and making sure the right staff members were available to answer questions.

“I’ll tell you this, you’ve got a good man who can deal with this,” said Jeff Beaver, executive director of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission and a committee member.

Members of Charlotte’s community committee said the process worked well there. Some said it might be a good idea for Guilford.

“The impact was felt immediately,” said Felicia Hall Allen, a sports attorney and motivational speaker who headed the committee in Charlotte.

Funny, that’s not how everyone saw it.

Independence High parent Anthony Carrothers lambasted CMS for the way he said that he and his son, Anthony Jr., and the entire family had been treated. Carrothers said CMS Law Enforcement and lawyers had been to his house four times in 10 days, and on one occasion an official apologized for the repeated intrusions.

“He said he was only doing what [CMS Chief Operating Officer] Mo Green told him to do,” Carrothers said, who labeled CMS’ probing as “harassment.”

Anthony Carrothers Jr. was a star quarterback for perennial gridiron powerhouse Independence.

Another Patriot parent James Wallace, father of Independence star running back Rod Chisolm, called the investigation a “witch hunt.” He said his family had also been unduly harassed by CMS officials probing into eligibility issues. Wallace said his family had done nothing wrong and that if the district’s excessive inquiries jeopardized his son’s athletic future, he would pursue legal action against CMS. Wallace said his son had accepted a scholarship offer to play at Appalachian State.

Sounds like tactics similar to the ones used against Northern High School custodian Louis Lawson, who rescinded his resignation and claims he was ‘interrogated’ for hours down at GCS headquarters. We could be looking at a legal showdown.
