Just when you thought the Main Street people had cleared out with their concrete-busting improvements to what used to be a perfect scene of turn-of-the-century (19th-20th) charm; Mother Nature has begun her own downtown closings by requiring public works on 5th Avenue.

While I’m almost on the subject, I spent a little time in Hendersonville this past month, and got to see again the public art on Main Street. Whereas old art was marked by its beauty and rare exquisiteness, today’s is marked by controversy. The mountain fountain has a cute nickname, but it looks to most folks like a lump, and if anything mimics the Grand Tetons more than the age-old, vegetated mountains of Western North Carolina. I think it looks like a lump.
