The Tar Heel State has improved in the latest report compiled for the Reason Foundation by JLF adjunct scholar and UNC-Charlotte professor emeritus David Hartgen.
At No. 20, North Carolina has jumped up from No. 23 in the latest report and No. 35 in 1998. Here’s a brief synopsis from Hartgen:
North Carolina improved in rural interstate condition, urban interstate condition, rural primary condition, congestion, bridge condition and fatal accident rates. In the new section, we note that North Carolina was one of only three states to improve on all seven measures of condition from 2002 to 2007, in spite of spending less than 1/2 the U.S. average per mile. While there is clearly a considerable way to go (North Carolina continues to rank in the 30s and 40s on most basic indicators), I hope we have turned the corner, and we look forward to continued improvement in the future.
