Adding fuel to the already raging inferno in the 8th Congressional District runoff, the five Republicans in North Carolina’s congressional delegation have endorsed Harold Johnson over Tim D’Annunzio.

From The Fayetteville Observer:

North Carolina’s five Republican congressmen said Tuesday they are endorsing Harold Johnson in the 8th Congressional District GOP primary runoff.

The announcement makes no mention of Johnson’s opponent, Tim D’Annunzio, but the news is yet another blow for the Raeford businessman who was called “unfit for public office” by the chairman of the state Republican Party on Monday.

The statement described the endorsement by Reps. Howard Coble, Sue Myrick, Walter Jones, Virginia Foxx and Patrick McHenry as a “bold show of unity” because they believe Johnson best reflects the Republican Party’s conservative values.

As I argue in a column this morning, the GOP establishment surge against D’Annunzio is good politically unless he wins. If he does, Republicans will either have to write off what is the most winnable district in the state or else tread water on their past statements. Neither option is palatable.
