Or so says a fire chief outside of Raleigh.

Wendell fire chief Tom Vaughan told the News & Observer that an SUV that crossed the median on U.S. 64 and killed two people went through a gap in the cable guard rail which had been down since November 7th. On that day a Well Fargo truck careened into the cables, knocked them down. They were down for the fatal Christmas Day accident which killed Ivan Burger, 20, and his mother, Barbara Burger, 57.

“The Wells Fargo truck knocked it down, but [the cable guard rail] prevented it from going into the other lanes,” Vaughan said. “It’s been two months, and the guard cables still haven’t been fixed. That’s unacceptable.”

A state transportation official said he did not know about the damaged guard cables until after the Christmas Day crash.

Now, of course, NC DOT says the cables will be fixed within 10 days. Cause of the crisis and all.
