At a meeting in his district earlier this week, Rep. Jim Crawford (D-Granville) one of the House Appropriations Committee chairs, warned of the repercussions of the anticipated revenue shortfall when the General Assembly convenes in January.  He gave this forecast of a new deal arrangement in North Carolina:

Overall, Crawford said his hopes are for programs similar to the Works Progress Administration of the pre-World War II Franklin Roosevelt administration, which resulted in numerous buildings and sewer and water projects.

The question, Crawford said, is whether a generation accustomed to working at an office on an eight-hour shift is willing to take such jobs compared to the people in the 1930s being used to getting their hands dirty.

He said he senses life ?is going to change a little bit.?

Perhaps not the change we were looking for.
