Newspapers are fond of doing “list” stories (the most dangerous intersections is a mainstay), but The Detroit News has put an interesting twist on that tradition with its list of Detroit’s most violent bus routes. Turns out students are a big part of the problem:

Students are heavy users of the system — and often part of the problem, officials say. About 10,000 high school students from Detroit Public Schools receive free or discounted passes to ride the bus to and from school.

Drivers have been assaulted by students four times and threatened three times, the report found.

Two weeks ago, Newman said she watched a student hurl a brick at a man’s head aboard the bus.

“He bled like I don’t know what,” she said.

The mayor has proposed a $12 million grant be used to put sheriff’s deputies on the buses. Maybe they should just kick the students off the buses and tell them to walk to school. That would, according to reports, get rid of much of the violence.
