I read with interest the breathless coverage of grand opening of Winston-Salem’s downtown Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts, complete with quotes from the usual powers-that-be about how it will be an economic development driver.

Right on cue, today’s Winston-Salem Journal lead editorial says the Rhodes Center’s mere existence justifies more public spending on the arts.

Seems to me like it’s inevitable, because no doubt there will be a funding shortfall just to maintain the center.
