The Durham Democratic Party leadership is getting together within the next 30 days to recommend a successor to the late Jeanne Lucas, who died this week at age 71 after a long battle with cancer. The party must give a name to Gov. Mike Easley, who would then have seven days to name Lucas’ successor.
Well, I have an idea. Why not name Durham DA Mike Nifong? After all, he’s got nothing to do right now. He can’t prosecute any cases because he’ll get laughed out of any courtroom by any jury with a pulse. And Easley has already signaled how much he thinks of Nifong by naming him DA to replace Jim Hardin.
Think about it. Nifong, whose name has become an uncomplimentary verb in legal circles, is taken out of the Durham prosecutorial equation, he goes to the State Senate where the ethical level is even lower than his, and some competent person can get appointed to the DA’s position (assuming someone other than Easley has input), and Nifong can keep the Democratic senate seat warm while he awaits his own disbarment and prosecution.
It’s win-win all around.
