How much of what runs amok in government occurs not by the meta-concepts passed ordinance by ordinance, but by the nitnoids that any self-respecting person wishing to show some signs of picking one’s battles dares not utter.

For example, I shall nitnoid a simple ordinance that would allow businesses to erect electrical fences in the City of Asheville. The major source of annoyance is flashbacks to Holocaust stories. The fences are to be regulated by the UDO, and

Electrified security fences are also allowed for government facilities and utilities or if required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for . . . .

Another problem is the signage. Hippies don’t like signs, and yet government requires them all over the place. Not only that, the signs must be trilingual, clearly discriminating against those who don’t speak English, Spanish, or glyph – as well as the visually impaired:

The sign must state: “Danger – Electric Fence” or “Warning – Electric Fence” in English and Spanish. The sign must include an illustration indicating the potential for electric shock.

Another irksome thing is:

A concern would be increased risk of danger to police, fire personnel, stray animals, and children.

I can understand the first three, but if we have a problem with parents letting their unauthorized infants run wild in industrial complexes, we have higher priorities than discussing electrical fences.
