The Huntersville Herald has a rundown on plans to ban left turns from Sam Furr (Hwy. 73) onto Statesville (Hwy. 21) and instead use something called “quadrant roadway intersection.”
This just seems to be an over-engineered way of saying “make a block.” Traffic would instead go thru the intersection, hang a right at another improved road, and another right onto Hwy. 21 to get headed in the same direction a left turn from Hwy. 73 would have produced.
Sounds interesting, perhaps even effective with the proper additional lane capacity. But the bias against unprotected left turns — a real no-no in the tidy traffic czar would — seems to be part of the motivation here as well.
