I have a running dispute with JLF’s Fiscal and Health Care Policy Analyst Joe Coletti about organ donation. Over the years, Joe and I have written and blogged about this.

Joe believes a free market for organs is appropriate and should be legal. I consider a market for organs an affront to human dignity and propose consideration of the policy known as presumed consent.

Despite your view on organ donation — and I pray you are committed to becoming a donor and have told your loved ones your decision — I suspect you’ll agree that a trial beginning in California today is bad news for voluntary donation efforts, no matter the outcome.

San Francisco transplant surgeon Dr. Hootan Roozrokh is accused of hastening the death of 25-year-old Ruben Navarro in order to harvest his organs. The doctor denies the charges.
