The local daily has two “What’s wrong with this picture?” blurbs today.

The first is in an article about the Second Amendment rally scheduled for this coming Saturday in downtown Asheville.

Last year, several of those attending openly carried firearms, which caused concern among city officials and police.

Why, I thought that was the whole purpose of the Second Amendment – to dissuade interloping, imposing tyrants from believing they are too big to fail. But, to respect the power structure’s wish to be more protected than the little paeons, people attending the rally this year may only bring empty holsters and signs with “supportive language.” I don’t believe it would be safe to bring Pop-Tarts in the shape of a gun, either.

The second declares:

Two charter schools will open their doors in Buncombe County come August, opening with them greater tension over whether they will help or detract from public education.

Whether they support or detract, we’ll end up subsidizing the detractive factors. While we’re at it, why don’t we cut to the chase and put the AP kids in remedial courses to make space in higher-education settings for at-risk students. I mean, if you choose one course, you should be forced to take the other. If you choose to study, you should go to a bad school that makes you study smut and rewards creativity in math over accuracy. If you choose to smoke pot, you should get to go to college for free instead of sitting through those awful high school classes that exist to punish the bookworms. If you survive high school with your bookworminess in tact, you should be forced to support the habits of the potheads for life. Isn’t that what government is about?
