Taught math. Was a social worker in Wilmington. Went to law school, became licensed in 1978. Wanted to be a trial attorney. Tried to get hired by a DA’s office. Unable to find one with an opening. Met with Dan K. Edwards, Durham DA at the time. Said he’s work for free. Man, shows how valuable his services were. Later became a full-time per diem ADA. June of 1979 moved to Superior Court. Has been there ever since.

In 1999 was chief asst. DA, considered “primary big-case trial attorney in Durham.” Was found to have prostate cancer then. Stuck on desk duty. Sorry, no tears here. Jim Hardin came to him in April 1995 and asked him if he’d be interested in DA position. Man, and Hardin is an OK guy. What possessed him?

“There was a perception things were not as they should be in traffic court” so he was sent there to restore order. Here I come to save the day. That puts a nice spin on his being relegated to traffic court: Cancer survivor wrangles things back into order.
