I was wondering if I’d see a correction after the N&R reported in its Sunday print edition that Northern Guilford High School principal Joe Yeager and atheltic director Derrell Force were “fired in March.”
Sure enough, a correction in today’s paper (since made in the online version):
The circumstances and timing of principal Joseph Yeager’s and Athletics Director Derrell Force’s departure from Northern Guilford High School were incorrect in a story in Sunday’s edition. Yeager and Force resigned April 10.
I’ve loosely used the phrase “people losing their jobs” when referring to the Northern investigation, and I guess that implies that people were fired. Indeed, head custodian Lewis Lawson was fired, but when you look at the way Guilford County Board of Education handled that matter, you have little doubt that Yeager and Force would have been fired had they not resigned.
Note the way Tom Keller’s article takes the burden of enforcing eligibility rules off principals and athletic directors with the money quote coming from Eastern Guilford AD Randall Hackett, who said “if a parent or kid lies about it, what can I do?”
But if no one’s enforcing the rules, then Yeager, Force and Lawson —not to mention basketball coach Stan Kowalewski — must have done something a lot worse than let five ineligible players slide by.
