Looking for work this morning, as I shall need another job to pay more than interest on back taxes this time around, I noticed UNCA was hiring a “progressively responsible” administrative assistant. Inquiring with Google, I found the phrase was rather common in the business world. Definitions vary, and I found a blurb from Northern Arizona University stating, “a committee should discuss definition of ‘progressively responsible’ . . .:” I think it means, “If you play along and act like you know what this means, you are subjugable;” a literal definition would mean, “being simultaneously irresponsible and responsible.” The best definitions indicate the phrase has something to do with taking initiative, but I get in trouble any time I get caught doing that. In my experience, most folks who would hire me to be an administrative assistant want me to complicate things. Their philosophy is that the human should serve the system and not the other way around.
