UNCC was poised for one of Bobby Lutz’ all-too-common “bad losses” — trailing a horrid Fordham (2-18) team by 10 on the road late — before reversing matters and coming out with a massive 77-72 win. With that the Niners moved to 18-5 and face always tough Dayton on Wednesday. The Flyers just waxed crosstown rival Xavier 90-65 as the A10 race comes down to the wire.

Losing to the Flyers on the road would not be bad loss, so the make-or-break section of UNCC’s season comes down to the three game home stand against Duquesne, Xavier, and St. Joe’s. Run the table there, avoid a bad loss at GW, and win a couple games in the A10 tourney, and the Niners will get a solid at-large bid to the NCAAs.

Do even better and UNCC could be looking at a very winnable first round NCAA game.
