This report considers whether the nutria, a big rodent which is something like a beaver / water rat cross, is colonizing North Carolina. Louisiana used to harvest — that’s harvest, not harbor — millions of these critters every year. That’s one reason why, once you’ve lived in Louisiana, you can never really complain there’s nothing to eat again.

Note to state officials: Don’t think of them as pests undermining highway embankments and flood control structures. Consider them rather as an opportunity to boost North Carolina’s fur industry, or a way to promote a barbeque culture without waste lagoons. It’s all in the marketing.

Really, they taste better than armadillo. And Louisiana will be happy to supply you with all the breeding stock you can ship.
